54 paintings · 4 worlds · no suit marks

A deck of playing cards where every suit and rank hides inside a painting.

54 works by Dr. Klein across four worlds — from the gods of Olympus to the celebrities of our time. There are no pips or corner marks: you read each card from its scene, and the key comes in the box.

Four worlds, four suits

A classic 54-card deck — with scenes instead of pips. Ancient myth, the Middle Ages and modern culture, sorted into four suits.

Suit and rank aren’t printed on the cards; they’re encoded in the details of each painting. Below is the key — the same one you’ll find in the booklet in the box.

Olympian Gods — Apollo and Daphne

Apollo and Daphne

Olympian Gods

Desire, metamorphosis, prophecy and fire. Hearts are the ancient myths in which mortals argue with gods over their fate.

Bearers of Secrets — The Barrel-Bearer

The Barrel-Bearer

Bearers of Secrets

Alchemists, messengers and secret orders. Diamonds belong to those who hold knowledge that is never spoken aloud.

Templars — The Templar Hunt

The Templar Hunt

Templars

Crusader steel, treasure maps and the long shadow of the Order. Clubs carry medieval intrigue from vow to legend.

Celebrities — Michael and the Chameleon

Michael and the Chameleon

Celebrities

The myths of our own time. Faces everyone knows, turned into archetypes: Spades ask what happens when a public mask never comes off.

How to play Magister cards

Four worlds, 54 cards and hundreds of stories. Play, divine and discover — choose your way.

Apollo and Daphne

The Magister game

The rule is simple: play a card of the same rank or suit. But eight Magister cards live in two worlds at once and open unexpected moves. Be first to empty your hand — and you are… the Magister!

Magister (2 or more players)

Each player is dealt 8 face-down cards. One card from the deck is placed in the centre of the table. On your turn, play a card of the same rank or the same suit on top of it.

But eight heroes of the deck live in two worlds at once. These are the Magister cards: they match either of their suits, because they are bound to another world not by colour, but by story. Only someone who knows the plots can see that link. The first to empty their hand wins.

Rules

  • If you have no matching card, draw one from the deck. If that card also does not match, you skip the turn.
  • A joker can become any card: the player names its suit and rank.
  • When the draw pile runs out, the played cards are shuffled and become the deck again.
  • A Magister card may be played on either of its two suits, and any card of either of those suits may be played on it.

First, There Were Paintings

Dr. Klein (real name Vasily Pochitsky, 1967–2024) was a Belarusian painter, illustrator and musician from Rechitsa. His work was exhibited from Moscow to New York, ran in the national press for nearly a decade, and illustrated books and records. Magister is his largest cycle: 54 paintings of a world he invented with his friend Alexander Zhilchik. He is gone. His world remains — in the paintings and in this deck.

“I was lucky to be friends with a genius… and that was Vasily Pochitsky.”

Alexander Zhilchik, creator of the concept
